Some may describe AT&T Inc. (T) as a telecommunications provider, but that simple description does not do justice to the company’s 130-year history. The original AT&T was established in 1885, and was one of the subsidiaries of the Bell Telephone Company founded by the inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell. In 1982, United States regulators ordered AT&T to spin off many of its subsidiaries. In 2005, one of these spin-off companies purchased AT&T and assumed its brand. In this sense, the current AT&T represents only the latest chapter. In this article, we take a closer look at its business and recent performance.
